Builder Faced Bigger Crisis than Falling Windows
John Hancock Tower was constructed in 1976 and it was the tallest building in the city of Boston and it has 166th position in the world. The master piece of architecture was the result of tremendous work done by the great architects I.M Pie and Henry N. Cobb. There were many controversies when the building was constructed. Architecture of the building was fine but there were loop holes in the engineering work. Henry N. Cobb was given the award for the fine architecture. There were bigger crisis faced by the builder other than falling of the window panes.
Following pointers provide handy information about the crisis:
- The glass building consists of blue colored glasses and the reflective surface is quite attractive. 10344 windows are present in John Hancock Tower. Window glass started falling during the construction. Wind blowing on the upper floors was quite strong and this affected the window glass. Glasses of windows started falling when construction work was going on and this made people worry.
- The weight of the glass of each window was about 500 pounds and there were about 62 glasses which fell from the building. The big problem was the basement which was constructed by digging the soil and the steel foundation was made. It was not enough and there was the danger that the building may collapse.
- Cracks began to appear in the nearby buildings and the problem grew heavy. Even the trinity church came under the influence of the cracks which started appear after the completion of the construction work. Many experts and architects started working for finding the real problem and the identification of the cracks and the basement loop hole made the perplexed situation.
- Many experts moved to Boston city for studying the problems in the Hancock tower and different conclusions were drawn. There was detail study about the building and close observation was made for identifying the problems. The glasses were not falling due to movement caused by the strong winds but people felt nauseated due to movements in the upper floor.
- Tuned mass dumper was installed in the 58th floor which helped in controlling the movement of the building due to strong winds. Renowned Cambridge engineer named William found the solution to the problem. The bonding between the chrome and the lead was the cause of the glass tragedy. USD 7 million was invested in repairing the glasses of windows.
There is solution to every problem but all the cost inflicted was beard by the window maker.
