Granary Burying Ground

Granary Burying Ground is one of the most popular cemeteries in the state of Massachusetts. Boston city has many cemeteries but the Granary Burying Ground has its own significance due to the burying of the great people in this ground. The great people list is quite long and it includes the patriots who gave their life for the country and even the people who died in the Boston Massacre were also buried on this famous ground. Park Street church is in the vicinity of the Granary Burying Ground and it is considered as one of the oldest burial ground in the state of Massachusetts.

  1. Granary Burying Ground lies on the Tremont Street and Suffolk University Law School is also in the vicinity of the burying ground. Boston Architect took the responsibility of designing the historical burial ground. Roger designed the gate of the Granary Burying Ground and the design of the gate is similar to the design of the Newport Touro Cemetery.
  2. The population of the city started growing at tremendous rate and this arouse the difficult situation which forced rulers to think about the construction of the burial ground which can meet the growing needs. In the 16th century people realized the need of new burial ground because Kings Chapel Burial Ground was situated in east and it was difficult to be reached easily.
  3. King Chapel Burial Ground was too small to meet the growing need of the people because population was increasing at rapid rate. The place near the Park Street church was chosen for making it a cemetery. Benjamin Franklin was buried in the place and plan was made to make the place beautiful by planting trees but the effort gone in vain.
  4. The division was made for construction of the houses and making the place suitable for granary burying ground. Northern part came under the plan of housing and southern part was converted into burial ground and also public buildings were constructed. After few years plan was passed for the extension of the burial ground. Many Boston families got the right to bury the family members on this burying ground.
  5. Many Tombs of great people were constructed but the graveyard of Benjamin Franklin was in poor condition because many years had passed and maintenance was not done by the care takers. Effort was made in the later century to make the graveyard in better condition.

The tomb of Benjamin Franklin is the oldest in the Granary Burying Ground.
